You have a point but not quite true. Not all Islam is the same. It really doesn't discourage freedom of thought. Some women like the culture. The women in the Shia sects have more power. Why do you think that the Sunni's in Syria hated Assad? Iran women serve in the government and the police force and also own their own businesses. Wearing a scarf in Public is really not an issue.
