the blunder began long before LBJ, but he certainly deserves the lion's share of blame for using Tonkin Gulf as the reason to commit 100's of thousands of troops to Vietnam (versus the 16,000 he inherited from JFK)

The US State Dept Asia desk was very bad at advising JFK...
