anything but detrimental to the unity & camraderie of the team and the fan base.

Of course that effect could be anywhere from negligible to significant. In my opinion cutting that discussion off when he did keeps it closer to the negligible end of the spectrum. Letting it blow up into a flame war could have pushed things towards the more significant effects end of that spectrum.
