In the early 60s my Dad paid our full time hired hand $1.50/hr. He was paying our temporary hay help, high school boys $1.25/hr. I recall hay help wages increased to about $2.50 to $2.75/hr. when I graduated high school in 72. In the fall after I went off to college Dad bought his first new big round baler. No more small square bales and no further need to hire hay help. My brother and I never got paid money. We each picked out a heifer calf when we weaned the calf crop in the fall. I sold my small cattle herd after graduation and they paid all my college expenses.
