Most people would agree that distance lessens the chance of infection. You aren’t likely to get sick talking to your sick neighbor on the other side of the street because of distance. But in more public areas, such as waiting in a checkout line you are in forced proximity to others who may be sick. That presents a problem because lines can’t be spaced so far apart they cease to become lines. So 6 feet is about as reasonable distance that can be achieved within the limited space of a store to hope reduce the spread of infection.
The same principle applies to masks. They have been long used by people who are immunocompromised to try to reduce exposure. Reducing exposure logically means some who aren’t sick won’t get sick. And some who are sick won’t maximally spread their infection. So there will be less overall cases of infection.
But those easily swayed by propaganda will ignore this, because the propaganda ignores this.
