56. The old boy had been sold and shipped off to America by his impoverished Irish parents when he was eight years old. He was what was known as a 'bound-boy' and was forced to work for a Mansfield, Ohio family until his 18th birthday. At that point he signed up and enlisted in an Ohio Infantry regiment. He served from 1842 till the end of the war in 1865. Most of his regiment was captured at a battle in Alabama and he spent the last nine months of the war at the Cahaba Confederate POW prison. He never returned to Ohio and after he was mustered out made his way to northwest Missouri. He farmed and raised 15 kids with two wives. My Grandpa was the next to the last one born.
