The Tigers lose gritty and productive players: Bates, Grill, Perkins, Warrick, and Gray. They lose potential in Warren and Marshall, and still possibly, Shaw.
Incoming, we’ll have 6-7 Randall and point guard Aaron Rowe, as well as transfer bigs Porter, Phillips, and Northweather and guards Mack and Stone. We have a good set of returning players in Mitchell, Robinson, Barrett, Pierce, Crowe, Boateng, and Burns.
The question is whether the Tigers will be worse, about the same, or better than our 24-25 team.
Most of what I think about the incoming players is based on Youtube highlights, which can be deceptive, but here goes:
Point guards: Robinson, Barrett, Rowe, and in a pinch Mack. All four are superior ball handlers, and have great foot speed. Rowe looks to be faster even than Robinson and Barrett -– in several videos, he goes around his defender who looks glued to the floor. He often gets the ball and goes the length of the floor for a layup, outracing his defender. Even though he’ll be a freshman, Rowe may get some minutes. I think that PG is improved, at least in depth.
Shooting guards: Mack, Stone, Boateng. Mack looks solid. If Stone can regain his shooting touch after sitting out a year, we may have a steal. And, what will Boateng do as a soph?
Bigs: We will have much more size next season. Compare Gray, Marshall, Pierce, and Mitchell with Burns, Phillips, Porter, Northweather, Pierce, and Mitchell, and no Tiger roster has ever been deeper in bigs. Phillips is very athletic, and may be an improvement over Gray. In my opinion, Marshall only had one game in which he performed very well – against Cal. So, how will the new set of bigs do? A mystery, but Porter is very athletic, plays like a wing. Northweather didn’t have very good stats at Oklahoma, but he has size and may be better than advertised. He scored 51 points in a game in high school, and there’s a video to prove it.
Burns? There are always questions about really tall players. No one, not even Drew King or Gabe DeArmond is ever willing to speculate on how good he can be. Burns is 7-4 or 7-5, so he is really big. He is likely the tallest in the SEC next season. The Youtube video which gives me hope is around a 20-minute workout where he makes moves and shoots like Wembanyama.
Wings: My guess is that Pierce, Crews, and probably Porter will fill the role. . I compare them to Bates, Crews, and Grill, a shorter and faster group. It’s hard to know whether the new guys will be better.
It appears the new roster is loaded with dark horses who could make or break the team: Burns, Boateng, Porter, Northweather, Rowe, Stone, and how much will Barrett, Pierce, and Crews improve?
I haven't commented on Randall, who has good size and seems to play somewhat like Mitchell. Freshman, may not play much.
I’m looking forward to next season.
