China’s tariffs on U.S. exports remained elevated due to the ongoing trade tensions that began during the first Trump administration. While China reduced tariffs for other countries, it maintained higher rates specifically for U.S. goods.
Average Tariff Rates
• China’s average tariff on U.S. goods: Approximately 16.2% by the end of 2022.
• China’s average tariff on imports from the rest of the world: Reduced to 6.5% by early 2022.
Sector-Specific Tariffs
• Agricultural products: China imposed tariffs such as 25% on soybeans and pork, and 15% on fresh fruit, dried fruit, and nuts.
• Energy and industrial goods: In February 2022, China announced tariffs of 15% on coal and liquefied natural gas, and 10% on crude oil, agricultural machinery, and certain vehicles from the U.S.
