When I was at Cornell, it was called slope day (there was one big ass hill at the West end of campus.
In the 70s and 80s, it was one huge party, and if it rained, the whole slope was a mud slide. The campus hated it because it ruined the beauty for graduation.
Unfortunately, when I was there it was kinda banned, but people went with it anyways, but you could not have kegs or anything. My last year, the administration tried to let it back with a ton of rules that the students broke anyways. Not sure where it is at today.
The nice thing we had there was the last day of classes were on Friday, but exams did not start until the next Thursday, so it was a great party weekend.
