Using the machinery of government to take over more and more control of individuals lives and claiming it is a "Christian" thing to do is using religion to justify the expansion of the state.

Charity is a responsibility of religion and the non religious to take care of those they seek to provide comfort to in this world. It isn't the responsibility of the individual via an omnipotent government.
