largely squeezed out the small food producers, essentially wiping out the free market, leaving us with an oligopoly. That was exacerbated by the FDA & their presumed seal of approval regarding the safety and nutrition of the food they inspect. Unfortunately, there's a revolving door between the FDA & the Big 4 food producers. Those in charge of inspecting the food often get high paying jobs with the companies they're supposed to be regulating, giving them incentives to curry favor from the execs of those companies... who, of course, want to maximize their profits. There are obvious conflicts of interest.
Additionally, the federal government pays for huge amounts of the food produced by the oligopolies & would have a huge influence on what they're putting into the food. But, that revolving door between the Big Government and Big Business creates that conflict of interests that was previously noted. The federal government is their largest consumer & the consumers determine demand, which in turn has a huge influence on what the producers produce. But when the conflict of interest are inserted into the equation, the watchdogs aren't necessarily looking out for the health and well being of the citizens as robustly as individual consumers, if their future financial well being militates against it.
The bottom line is that the government has created a problem, as usual, and until they reform the structure of the system to enable a free market, they are the only ones who can quickly effect as rapid and as robust a change as should reasonably be called for.
It wouldn't make sense for the government to create a problem that would be extremely difficult for the citizens to correct on their own & then walk away from the problem to leave the people to fend for themselves.
It would be similar to a situation where a corrupt/incompetent government fostered the growth of the Mafia or other organized crime families & then when the problem becomes very obvious, to walk away from the problem they precipitated in the interest of smaller government.
