Elian had a legal right to be here, by law not by policy, with guardians who were legal citizens. On the other hand, his father wanting him to be returned home also made for a compelling argument, hence the ongoing controversy. Naturally, the Clinton administration handled it in the worst way possible.

Since his return, Castro made sure Elian would become a good little communist and made him a hero of the Communist Party. Mission accomplished. He spouts communist slogans as well as any American Democrat, and as now a member of the Cuban parliament.
