And I think he focuses on these things to the detriment of some other areas: turnover percentage, and steal percentage.

I think Gates believes that if he can field a team that's elite in these areas, it can make up for a lack of rebounding or strong interior defense. We're consistently bad in terms of opponent's field goal percentage, we don't rebound well on the defensive glass (though we're actually pretty good on the offensive glass, go figure) and we don't block shots.

It seems like Gates could find a way to split the difference here and address rebounding and interior defense while still turning the other team over consistently.
