universities told the US government to go fvck themselves with DOD projects?

Materials research is underway at universities for stealth technology. Light bending tech for optical stealth is being researched.

All this basic science being researched for Lockheed and other defense contractors to use in weapons programs.

If the objection is universities getting taxpayer money, fine. They can have even more money sent to defense contractors to staff up at higher salaries than graduate and doctoral students, and with a profit motive, to do the basic research done at universities.
