There's an element of unfairness in paying off the loans of people that still owe, that decided to get the loans in the first place.
There's an additional element of unfairness in that, one way or another, the entire population of the US (which includes a significant portion of people who never did get a college education - at least some of which because they couldn't afford it) would bear the burden of paying off the college debt. It's weird that people who never went to college (many of which lower socioeconomic status) would be bearing the brunt of people with higher socioeconomic status' college borrowing decisions).
What about people who were responsible and paid off their loans? There's an element of social welfare about the entire situation, except that in this case the consequences are more directly tied to the behavior, and I htink most folks have less empathy towards that.
ALL of that said, my opinion is that the taxpayer shouldn't be forgiving these loans.
ALL of THAT said, I think student loan forgiveness is a better use of the taxpayer dollar than blowing it up in Ukraine.
