and wasteful our government has been', I don't believe that is an argument against tariffs.

I do agree that the general principle that free & open markets is good thing for countries, but also think that there can be situations where unilaterally eliminating tariffs and trade barriers in one's own country can cause situations that are detrimental or even dangerous to the citizens, especially if other countries are creating barriers to exports from our country &/or heavily subsidizing exports to our country... and even more so when doing so in a targeted manner in particular industries/products, especially in strategically important ones. For instance being totally dependent upon an adversary country for key medical or defense products and supplies.
