If that is true, the price that needed to be paid has not been. 1 Corinthians explains it this way;
"And if Christ is not risen, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins! Then also those who have fallen asleep in Christ have perished. If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men the most pitiable."
And it's not that God chooses to condemn us to hell. Because we all sin and sin often, we are born heading there. He simply and graciously offers a lifeline we can choose to reject if we so desire, and that because in His love He does not force our will.
