around the site was far more moving. Letters, poems, photos and so many other things from around the world affixed to the fence. My goodness. We went after a Mizzou game around ‘96 maybe? Initially, proposing going almost felt a little sick & twisted - we really didn’t have a grasp of what we would find. ‘Ok - let’s go look around for about ten minutes so we can say we’ve been’
We all go off on our own reading & looking at each memento hanging there. My goodness - we were all so moved. Certainly changed the mood of our group as we were pretty quiet for the next couple hours after leaving.
The present day memorial is certainly something to see and yes, they did it right. For the many who visited the early chain linked site and some of the victim’s families, there were quite a few who wanted the fence & contributions kept & added to. They ultimately put some of that in the museum and educational movies.
Hard to please everyone in that kind of situation. The 9/11 memorial was even more difficult. For one, a single woman fought any plans to replace with another building on the site stressing it is now a memorial. She won.
