...The AD referred to the wrong award in their announcement.

There are two (unrelated) "Clarence Big House Gaines CoY" awards.

The one referenced by the AD's social media announcement is https://www.clarencegainesaward.com/

(as you can see here: https://imgur.com/vhzwbtN )

But the award that Gates is actually receiving is a from a different organization (NSMA) and is limited to black coaches:

That explains how a 22-12 coach was chosen.
