My anniversary today

54 years ago today at the Mart Bldg in Stl was drafted into the Army. Had us count off by 3 and 2s were Marines. I was a 1 but you could trade. I passed
I had already turned down the AF to be an F-4 pilot---having taken the physical and tests but as a career choice --6 yrs--I passed
In the 6th week of Army Basic at FlW I got called in to the Capts office to say the Navy was offering me OCS. But as 3 yrs 4 months and decided I didn't like the military I passed
Got orders to Ft Polk LA for AIT--11B infantry but the last week before getting out of Basic got orders to go to COMSEC--communications security a 42 week course in NJ at Ft. Monmouth In turned out 75% of the men signing up for the school had failed so they put 10 college grad draftees to see if it was the school or the students. We all passed so is was the students As an aside, went through crytp school with Iranians too as the Shah was still running things
Ended up in VN and came back to hatred by people back home as we were losing the war. The war by then was totally unpopular especially in the media. Hey not my fault. LOL Ended up back at Mizzou in law school complete with the GI Bill.
Long story short my DC reserve unit got called up for the Fall of Saigon in 1975 but I said once is enough as they had ended the draft so why should I go twice
