and Mexico seems much dumber to me. It's had ruinous consequences for so many of our middle-class and blue-class citizens and has hollowed out so many urban areas and small towns.

I don't understand this concept of free trade when virtually every country we trade with puts tariffs on US made products or agriculture, or other restrictions to favor their producers over ours. In some cases, like China with steel, they subsidize their producers so they can flood our market with below cost steel to put our steel producers out of business.

That's not "free trade." Or maybe it is, but not to me. A serious country concerned about its own citizens first wouldn't put up with that, but we have for 40-50 years. That's really stupid.
