and avoiding liability in the vetting and hiring of coaches by those who are used to doing that with high level hires - Also it lends the appearance of impartiality. But the biggest thing is the vetting. Takes it out of the university hands for major screw-ups. I would say someone like Quin Snyder may not have been hired with a search firm in place. He had to have been using drugs and other things before he came Mizzou. Don't be fooled - these firms will often use private detectives to vet a candidate. A university simply isn't equipped for that.
