But the defensive metrics have been 180, 181 and 69 this season.

I get that the offense just didn't look like it had any answers against Drake, but it's a fact that Gates's teams are consistently among the better offensive teams in the country.

What will it take for Gates to take the next step and coach up an elite defensive squad? The teams that win it all can do both. So far, Gates has only proven he can do one.
