The starting points and the trend lines are obviously polar opposites.
Let me be clear, I DID NOT WANT US TO HIRE DENNIS GATES.....but I will be honest about the situation.
What happened this year is pretty clear evidence that what happened last year was an anomaly. A healthy Grill & Tonje probably don't get us NCAA wins, but we'd clearly have won more than 8 games and an honest appraisal of last year's scores probably doubles our wins.
This team was in-arguably a better team than in 2023 and played a tougher schedule. And won many of those tougher games in more dominant fashion than we did in 2023.
Texas firing Gus Fring is not a valid comparison to Gates at MU and a reason to fire him.
That being said, I fully expect a step forward next year.
I expect a better non-con....not a pile of ranked teams, but making all of our 275+ opponents more like 150-225 opponents.
I expect a regular season record of about 23-8, depending on schedule.
I expect to not have a late season losing streak of more than 2 games and if it's 2 in a row, they both better be top 15.
I expect a trip to the SEC semi's.
I expect a trip to the Sweet 16, at least.
Failure to achieve these things does not automatically mean I'll be ready to fire Gates....context will matter.
