Gates is a great recruiter and wonderful man. His players love him and he appears to run a good program. And when those talented players are playing very well it looks really good. However, when it comes to X's and O's, and necessary mid-game adjustments, and if his team is not playing at a high level, we struggle mightily.
He seems to be one of those "this is what we do" coaches incapable of moving to plan B if the other team is shutting us down. The offense yesterday was horrific to watch. They knew what we were doing, they defensed it, and our only response was to have the guard dribble for 30 seconds before turning it over.
I like Gates as a man. I am not so sure he is all that good of a strategic coach, and to be candid signs actually indicate at this point he is not.
