Iowa watching one of my younger sons back in the mid to late 2000s. I watched Jefferson, our Platte Valley Conference rival beat an urban/inner-city team from Des Moines. I don't believe any of the Jefferson farm boys could have earned a uni and roster spot for that big city team. But they were extremely well coached and worked together as a team. Jefferson is a 1A high school in Nodaway County with no more than 150 kids K through 12.
