The rationale behind that was usually greed or power. That is the human condition.

Clearly, humankind is not as aggressive now as it was 100s of years or millennia ago. There are laws in place to prevent killing, conquest, and ruthless expansionism. When the laws don't work, we still have wars, but they are comparatively few and far between.

I don't mean natural laws, I mean laws that are actually written down, understood and enforceable.
