this season doesn't change that. I'm pretty sure Jones isn't going to get any less money. I think he just converted part of his contract into a signing bonus, which is a maneuver to increase cap space.

How is it in any way detrimental to Chris Jones, what is he "sacrificing" by restructuring his contract?
