pretty much only the conference champion was guaranteed to make the NCAA's. And while having the best record in the regular season was good the conference 'champion' was the team that won the tournament. The NCAA's didn't go to 32 teams until the mid-70's and 64 teams until the 1980's. So by then I'm guessing it was so ingrained in him he wouldn't think about doing anything differently
