During his first term, President Donald Trump, despite being a Republican and often associated with conservative policies, took some actions that some liberals or left-leaning individuals viewed as favorable, or at least relatively moderate. Some of these actions included:
Criminal Justice Reform (First Step Act): In 2018, Trump signed the First Step Act into law, which was a bipartisan criminal justice reform bill. The law aimed to reduce mandatory minimum sentences for certain nonviolent crimes, give judges more discretion in sentencing, and provide inmates with more opportunities for rehabilitation. This was widely supported by liberal groups advocating for prison reform.
LGBTQ+ Rights Protections: In 2020, Trump’s administration allowed transgender individuals to serve in the military, reversing an earlier ban, though the specifics of this policy were debated. In addition, under Trump, some LGBTQ+ rights expanded in areas like healthcare, although his administration's stance on LGBTQ+ rights overall was mixed and contentious.
Environmental Protections (Public Lands): While Trump rolled back numerous environmental regulations, he did sign a bill in 2019 to permanently reauthorize the Land and Water Conservation Fund, which helps protect national parks, public lands, and access to recreation. This move received praise from some environmentalists and liberals who viewed it as a positive step for conservation.
North Korea Diplomacy: Trump’s efforts to engage diplomatically with North Korea, including his summits with Kim Jong-un, were seen by some as a diplomatic approach that might avoid further military escalation. Although controversial, this was viewed by some as an attempt to de-escalate tensions and potentially promote peace.
Healthcare (Prescription Drug Pricing): Trump expressed interest in lowering prescription drug prices, which was a key issue for many liberals. While he did not pass major legislation to accomplish this, he did take executive action aimed at reducing drug prices, such as allowing the importation of drugs from other countries.
Immigration (DACA): While Trump did not fully end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, which protects undocumented immigrants brought to the U.S. as children, his administration attempted to phase it out. However, the Supreme Court ruled in favor of DACA in 2020, preventing its immediate end, which was seen as a win by many advocates for immigrant rights.
