Gates' tutelage.
(2) Mizzou offered Tonje a small fortune to stay, but he didn't want to play for an 0-19 coach. He wanted his skills to be developed.
Generally speaking, we had to pay above market-value not only for new players but also to retain the players we had. In Tonje's case, we outbid Wisconsin but he wanted a coach who could develop him into a better player – and it turned out to be the right decision for him.
We'll have to continue overpaying for talent until we run the clock out on Gates contract — which, unfortunately, is guaranteed through 2029.
