I don't think he wanted the tallest team. He wanted "length"… players with long arms who could make it hard for opponents to pass and move the ball around, for better defense.

Interesting that length was/is a big staple of Florida State's program, although they didn't win the ACC or make a deep tournament run while Gates was an assistant there.

I don't know how much length he had at Cleveland State.
