Every human being has a moral obligation to help those who are less fortunate.
Government, through taxation and social spending, helps each person fulfill that moral obligation.
Therefore, it is both moral and morally compulsory for government to impose taxation for the purpose, among others, of providing assistance to the less fortunate among us. And indeed, this spending makes the world a better place, and since we all live in this world, it is to all of our benefit.
It is therefore immoral and reprehensible for our government to cut the following:
$131 million UNICEF grant for polio immunization.
$90 million Chemonics contract for malaria prevention, benefiting 53 million people.
FHI 360 project in Yemen, providing aid to malnourished children amid the ongoing civil war.
WHO's Global Drug Facility, supporting 3 million tuberculosis patients, including 300,000 children.
Elizabeth Glaser Foundation's HIV care, reaching 350,000 people in Southern Africa.
Uganda’s Ebola contact tracing and surveillance programme.
$34 million medical supply distribution in Kenya, covering HIV, malaria, and other treatments.
87 shelters in South Africa, supporting 33,000 women who are victims of domestic violence.
Healthcare services for 3.9 million children and 5.7 million women in Nepal.
Helen Keller International’s neglected tropical diseases programme, treating over 35 million people in West Africa.
Malnutrition treatment for 5.6 million children and 1.7 million women in Nigeria.
Prove me wrong.
