The businesses know that the more outrageous the headlines or claims on those gossip shows on news networks, the more views and the more revenue.

The author of American Psycho picked up on this motif. Patrick Bateman would always watch a news program called “The Patty Winters Show” in the morning. The more outrageous the topic of the show or the guests on the show, the more likely Bateman would hallucinate. As part of the book’s commentary on society, the farther our news reporting departs from reality, the farther people get detached from reality.
