I hate seeing extra "oomph" put in to calls that will please the home crowd. It makes me think the official is getting a kick out of being cheered. And, you konw what? Humans are human.
Having seen high major college basketball up close and personal (beneath the basket) several times, I can say this:
What looks like a ton of space on TV is in fact not very much space at all. The athletes are enormous, strong, and very fast. Daylight gets gobbled up immediately. There's not really much of a thing as an open shot.
I can also say this: 99% of the fouls you see called, there's contact. And at least half the time when there's no call, there's also contact. It looks like it might "not be much" on TV, but it is *ROUGH*. Pushing, shoving, grabbing, everything.
So, you could call a foul multiple times on every single offensive possession. But they don't. Clearly the refs are told not to.
