1. First and foremost, great effort, best game of the season. It was nice seeing us go toe to toe with a top 8 type team, a certain 1 or 2 seed, and be so close to stealing the win on the road against a vastly superior team. I said the game, and most of our remaining games, was unwinnable, but we could have won last night if just a few things had fallen our way. Like been a little more competent on inbounds plays, had a few more 3 pointers gone in. We never let them run away from us, and blow the game open, kept in close contact and within striking distance right to the end.
2. Two good outings in a row now, what does that mean, after the middling performances the first 21 games. Is Pingeton doing anything different? Is our talent better than we showed the first 21 games? Did a light go on and we can expect to be competitive the rest of the season even against the elite teams we still have left, like Tennessee, LSU, Kentucky, Oklahoma? Not to mention Ole Miss and Vandy? No, no, and no. Having given credit for a great effort last night, my sense is this game was an anomaly, just one of those unexplainable things that happens sometimes to really good teams when they play much worse teams. Maybe Texas overlooked us, thought they could just go through the motions, idk.
3. We will find out quickly if there is any lasting significance and carry over from the Texas game. Tennessee on Sunday, LSU next Thursday. Both at home. Both teams are so much bigger and more athletic and talented than us it’s not even funny. Let’s see how we do in those 2 games before we say there is a trend here from the Miss St and Texas games. Can we keep the next two games close and competitive? I don’t expect to win either one, but how we lose is important, at least to me. If we play our best I think we have a better chance against UT to keep the game close into the 4th quarter.
4. Really liked Randles play last night. She’s a gamer, a junkyard dog type player, not afraid to take it inside and challenge opponents who are bigger and better. We have seldom had players like that here. Too bad she’s a one and done, would have liked to see her here longer.
5. Still think our ceiling is 3-13 or 2-14 in SEC play, with Arkansas and TAMU being the only realistic opportunities for wins. But watching them battle Texas close last night gives me some hope (at least temporarily), that we could steal a game or two the rest of the year against tournament level teams.
