I do know the planes have some sort of collision warning system. I am not sure exactly how that works (radar, or otherwise).
they said last night that commercial planes and the helicopters work off different radio communications, but did not go into details of the radar and known real time location.
Clearly this was an area that had two intersecting normal flight paths, so either there is a timing mechanism put in place, or altitude rules. I guess time will tell what broke
