The funds were used to arm the Temple Guard, to guild the sanctuary, and provide for the levites - who were basically in charge in taking the best of the people's crops and livestock for sacrifice.
The temple tax was compulsory for all israelites, and any extra given was not mandated by Hebrew religious law, but done by rich benefactors to receive the praise of man, and in their mind, find favor with God. The Woman giving the coins was under compulsion to give from all she had to merely pay a tax.
So in today's meaning. The Temple treasury was used to equip soldiers with weapons of war, make the centralized religious government look impressive and beautiful, and to pay the bureaucrats who's job is to take from the people what they owe the government on a yearly basis, basically the IRS.
No wonder you love it so much.
