"When I first got into sales, I totally sxxked. It was a profession that required learning and experience. I used to go to the library and read sales books. It helped, but the best lesson came from watching Johnny Carson. He was great at interviewing people by asking a question and then let the guest talk. I learned that God gave you two ears and one mouth for a reason.
Later on, it led to a crazy position where my job was to save the deal cause the existing customer had served notice that they were leaving. It was on-going big bucks that we didn't want to lose. After an early morning flight, rental car, find the place it was show-time. Every meeting started off the same way. Well, good morning everyone, my name is John and I am here... before I could finish, 15 people were screaming at me. I'm thinking, the other guy who screwed it up is gone, start nodding and just listen. After 5 minutes of this, I would grab my notepad and walk out. Then, I would count to 30 and walk back in. Well, hello again everyone, my name is John and I'm here to listen to your concerns but please one at a time..how bout you go first. If I made it to noon and bought lunch every deal was saved.
Yesterday, we saw the same thing in North Carolina and LA. except it was following a Hurricane and Apocalypse. In NC, it was talking to the actual people. Their concerns were heard and solutions provided. It was very moving to see Melania out there embracing the people. She is truly more beautiful on the inside. In LA, it was hearing from the people first and then the politicians. All I heard from them was we want the money but don't tell us what to do and nothing but bs red tape from the mayor. They can but it will take a week when everyone knows its 18 months while the people remain homeless. I'm thinking get up and come back in and #47 did a great job."
