45 million in pennies

That's 4.5 billion pennies. The coins last for decades. How many damn pennies are in circulation? That doesn't even seem possible to need that many pennies every year.
The demand for pennies (all coins) is going down. It seems all we'd have to do every year is replace the coins that are lost and hoarded by people, at the most. Are they trying to tell me that number is 4.5 billion just for pennies every year? Something doesn't add up here.
The dollar bill is next. Paper money doesn't last nearly as long and is very expensive. They tried to get rid of the trusty George Washington when they came out with that Sacajawea dollar coin, but no one wanted that at the time.
