In other words, we have 2 options:

(1) Fire Gates and light $17M on fire by paying the buyout.

(2) Use that $17M to buy a roster that's too good to fail.

#2 makes a lot more sense – while the buyout continues to decrease by $4M each season. Either way, it costs an extra $17M that could otherwise go towards football... but that's the predicament our former AD put us in.
