Most years you want your main rivals to fail miserably.
It worked out in '07 because we beat KU. Otherwise, if we had lost, they might have reached the national title game – and won it against a very beatable Ohio State team. And that kind of monumental achievement could have realistically parlayed into a Big Ten invite.
Instead, KU is still a joke in football and none of the major conferences are interested (especially now that all the "seats" have been filled).
So of course if you KNOW in advance that your rival isn't going to win anything meaningful, you can hope/root for them to win and boost your SoS/resume.
But unfortunately, no one here has a crystal ball to see the future, so it's best/safest for them to lose as much as possible and decrease the likelihood of winning something meaningful in the post-season.
