Like all of the lawfare operations, the goal was to embarrass Trump and make him unelectable.
As is usually the case, ideas created inside the tight insular blue bubbles don't play as well with regular Americans outside of those bubbles.
The undecided voters who were supposed to be put off by Trump after these charges were brought were instead put off by the process being used against Trump.
The Dems are truly flummoxed by the outcome because inside of the blue bubbles it worked like a charm. The people who hated Trump hate him even more now. They simply cannot comprehend why the rest of America was not swayed to their side by this.
