If the rioters and their leader had succeeded in their goal, which was to install Donald Trump as President after he lost the election, it would very likely have led to the end of our republic. It is very unlikely, of course, that they could have succeeded. But it’s also very unlikely that they Confederate States of America could have succeeded, so that is not a good measure of the seriousness of the threat.
