They would shoot you for calling them all Mexicans though. I worked with an engineer from just south of Taos and he was very adamant that the people in the Rio Grande Valley are descendants of the conquistadors (Spaniards).

There are some really nice places in the state - Taos, White Sands, the Sangre De Cristo, San Juans and Jemez Mountains and a lot of wasteland too. The drive from Farmington to Gallup through the Navajo reservation is among the bleakest scenery and displays of abject poverty in the US.
