Russia reached its maximum size under Peter the Great and he is considered to be the greatest Czar in Russian history. Putin sees himself as Peter the Greast II and his goal is to restore Russia to the size it enjoyed under Peter the Great. Ukraine is merely the first step, Ukraine is merely Putin's first bite. It is better to support Ukraine and, hopefully, have it stop Putin now ratlher than to face the Russians in Central and Western Europe.
