Previous segment Dave had a guy on who had invented a substance to remove spray paint from taggers and vandals. They had spray painted a street sign with bright orange traffic marking paint and then used the vandal-proof to remove it.

Gumbel comes out for his segment and is sharply dressed but no socks. Letterman says "I can fix this", grabs the orange spray paint, and paints Gumbel's ankles.

I think that was the last time Bryant came on the show.
