You must not have played sports. Ending a season on a high note has carryover effect into the next year. Confidence is a player's attribute.

Entering a preseason poll makes it more likely to stay in as a team does not need to earn its way as much. Mizzou started at what, 6 and because of that stayed pretty much in the Top 25 in spite of blowouts and a late season loss. And since the Committee tends to track the AP poll, it is important to stay in the Top 25

Florida State was an outlier, and those happen most years. Your post ignores the psychological impact of winning your last game(s)
