Len Davis, the New Orleans police officer sentenced to death for ordering the murder of a woman who reported his misconduct to NOPD officials, is leaving death row.
President Joe Biden commuted Davis's sentence early Monday morning. Davis was one of 37 federal death row inmates who saw their sentences changed from execution to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
In October 1994, Davis conspired with drug dealer Paul Hardy to murder Kim Groves. The 32-year-old mother and Ninth Ward resident reported Davis to NOPD brass for beating a young man. Davis, who at that time was under federal investigation for running a protection racket for cocaine dealers, paid a drug dealer, Paul Hardy, to shoot and kill Groves within a day of her filing her complaint. Davis was convicted a year-and-a-half later on deprivation of rights under color of law resulting in death and a conspiracy charge.
