Hard to overestimate what a great job Dawn Sullivan has done here in her first two years, taking a truly awful team and immediately getting us to the 2nd round of the NCAA tourney, then following it up with a Sweet 16 run and the biggest upset of the tournament over 2 seed SMU. But like every coach its going to be what have you done for us lately. And there are challenges to keep us where we are now and even improve.
The immediate challenge is replacing the offense lost from Iliff and Vernon moving on. And she took a huge step towards filling that void with the portal commitment from Caylen Alexander, who will step in right away, however like Vernon she will be a one and done here.
The 18 person roster limit adds to this challenge. By my count we:
1. Lost 7 seniors: Vernon, Iliff, Finney, Isenberg, Catala, White and Franco, with the first 5 being key contributors.
2. Have 15 current players coming back (pending transfers).
3. Gain 6 players, 5 freshmen and Alexander from the portal.
Still would like to see Sullivan add another high quality transfer or two. We have some excellent players returning, with Sands, Crownover, Dudley, deMarrais and Haith. But most of the rest of the roster is young and untested. Morrissey is going to be a key, if she can step up and have the impact her ranking indicated, after limited playing time, that would be huge. But the other 5 freshmen had no playing time at all, except for Maxwell getting a few minutes. Are any of them good enough to contribute in 2025?
With the roster limit, something has to give. May see some transfers with returning players. And may see a lot of redshirts from the incoming freshmen class. Harvey from GA seems to be the one most ready to play, #10 recruit in the nation, #1 in Georgia.
We made huge steps the last two years as Sullivan used the portal wisely. But to stay close with the gold standard in the SEC (Texas, Kentucky, Florida), and challenge for a top 16 seed, we really need to keep upgrading at nearly every position.
